2020.10.28 13:05 BuckGB Baldur’s Gate III Community Update #10 - Romance Numbers & Cinematic Tweaks

The latest community update for Baldur’s Gate III is primarily dedicated to highlighting the latest early access patch that improved the game’s cinematics, revamped some scenes, and fixed a number of miscellaneous issues. Beyond that, the update also shares some EA stats in order to remind us that the tracking robots are ever vigilant .
Here are the text parts:
Hello everyone,
It’s big patch time. But this time, not only are you going to feel the improvements, you’re also going to see them. As we’ve previously said, Early Access is about improving and iterating on every single facet of the game, and that includes all of the things you see and hear.
In this big patch, we’ve got general fixes for cinematics such as this one below. He was starting to get a crooked neck, and we’re pretty sure he doesn’t have health insurance so we helped him out a bit. See for yourself[...]
It’s not just about tweaks though. As many of you know, despite playing through the Early Access content sometimes for up to a hundred hours or more (wow!) you still haven’t seen all of the content, because incrementally new things are seeded into the game. In this case, a missing cinematic. Where once was darkness, there is now light!
See if you can spot the differences in the game for yourself, or continue to read this Community Update with attached patch notes for spoilers. You know you want to.
A certain song has also been ‘re-shot’ by our cinematics team, which gives you an excuse to check it out again. Did you need one? Side note: we’ve been watching your reactions to this song in your VODs and YouTube videos, as well as in various streams, and the reactions are beautiful. Watching you play the game as we improve it is very motivating for all of us.
On the topic of music and joy, last week saw the Symphony of Sin, which included the first ever live performance of some of the music from Baldur’s Gate 3, as well as some wonderful songs from Divinity: Original Sin 2. You can watch the VOD here, it’s well worth it[...]
With that said, let’s look at some of the data that’s been making us smile over the week.
Everyone knows you can pet the dog in Baldur’s Gate 3, but did you know the dog has been petted 400k times? Such a good boy deserves that many pets.
Speaking of good boys, last update we discussed how Gale was ultimately attacked quite a lot. Check out last week’s update for the stats on that. Somewhat contradicturally, he’s the most “romanced” of the party. He’s been “romanced” by 33% of players. Shadowheart came second, falling in love with 31% of players, and in return 31% of players fell in love with Shadowheart.
1.37% of players chose to sleep alone. Which is cool too! We have the other stats, but thought it might be fun if you gave it a shot and guessed them. One thing we’re seeing is the stan memes aren’t correlating with the actual “romance data”. For sure, there’s enough tinder in the campfire to ignite some flames.
On a less romantic note (though this really depends on your tastes), 5.87% of players tried to steal the ring… but 26.3% of those players merely sucked a toe. If you haven’t got there yet, you’ll know when you see it. Since we’re talking about failure statistics, many people have made it to The Underdark. But 40.79% of players who jumped down a large, dark hole arrived dead, because they leapt without Feather Fall.
We’re saving perhaps the most interesting until last. Slight spoiler, so if you don’t want spoilers, don’t read this. You may know that at a point in the game, you may side with one of two factions: the Tieflings against the goblins, or with Minthara who demands the gates are opened for the goblins to attack the Druids Grove.
74.85% of you stood with the Tieflings, and 25.15% of you sided with Minthara. Good outweighs evil, it seems.
An optimistic note to end on.

2020.10.26 20:40 WorldSystems888 Working Knowledge >>>>> Academic Marxism

Or as I like to call it, intellectual trivia.
What is working knowledge? Working knowledge is productive, or useful knowledge -- it produces explanations, generates predictions, and is open to empirical falsifiability and updates. What is "academic" Marxism? Academic Marxism, popularly referred to as "Western Marxism", is a hermeneutical (interpretative) approach to revolutionary texts, rather than an illuminating one. While I've read all the theory and texts, you generally do not need to consume vast tomes in order to have a working knowledge of Marxism, and depending on where the reader is at, it can often be counterproductive and mystify the machinations of Capital even more.
In light of this, and the fact that human beings rely on heuristics, rather than detailed, doctrinal knowledge to make choices in real life, I want to collate some rules of thumb that I've found to be helpful in understanding the core of Marxist theory for people that have little to no prior knowledge, in order of importance. Please feel free to add on or critique.
The Tendency for the Average Rate of Profit to fall: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendency_of_the_rate_of_profit_to_fall#:~:text=This%20theory%20is%20sometimes%20called,outputs%2C%20causing%20falling%20profits).
Across all industries, over time, the average rate of profit declines. This is as immutable a natural law as gravity, and it is what leads to all crises under a capitalist (for-profit) mode of production. If capitalism operates solely by seeking profits, and profits will forever and immutably decline, then capitalism as a system is doomed to self-cannibalization and failure. How have capitalist nations avoided this fate?
Colonialism & Imperialism: As rates of profit fall due to increasing competition over a finite market, the only way to keep capitalism afloat is to expand to other markets. This is the Marxist analysis for the past five hundred years of colonialism by Western European nations and their settler colonial states, and Imperialism. Remember, profit falls under both capitalist and socialist systems (in which the workers own the means of production, but they are still overall governed by the profit motive), the only difference is that under a socialist regime, profits are a secondary consideration to managing crisis and taking care of people. This has both a political and economic arm -- the Western bourgeoisie would not have created the entire world-system of global capitalism through violence and bloodshed, if they had been cut off from taking over political institutions (and their militaries) or building ones (like liberal democracy) that merely act as an executive committee for their rule.
Wage-Labor: Laborers are not paid for the effort they put into producing a product or delivering a service. They are paid for the time spent doing those things, which otherwise would have been spent securing their own livelihood, the livelihood of their families, and reproducing the next generation of workers. This is, in essence, a Marxist interpretation of the "social contract" -- "free" laborers would only consent to be part of a society in which their livelihood and reproduction is guaranteed, if they must direct their time and energies to making trinkets and baubles that are not directly relevant to those things. If they are forced to participate in this society at below subsistence ("starvation") wages, or ones which don't allow them to marry, reproduce, and raise families, then the social contract has been broken, and the workers are not "free", they are in fact slaves, "wage slaves".
Labor Theory of Value: The value of a product or service, denoted by its price, is an approximation of the amount of socially necessary labor-time ("socially necessary" meaning necessary for the reproduction of society as a whole) that went into creating it. All products and services are always traded on the basis of this labor-time, unless violence has led to unequal exchange.
Unequal Exchange: Keep in mind that wages are a function of what is frequently called "cost of living". If workers in other countries, are kept in such destitute and poor conditions that they are willing to work for far lower wages than workers in the imperial core because of the relative difference in costs to stay alive in their societies, then you have, in effect, created a global reserve army of labor. As Chad Parenti says, these countries are not poor, they're rich, the people are poor. They're not underdeveloped, but purposefully overexploited through centuries of colonialism and ongoing Western imperialism, spearheaded by the US. If living standards were to rise in these countries, so would the cost of living, and therefore the living wage, which would destroy global capitalism as a whole, as profits have already hit near rock bottom except for a few select industries in "developed" or "mature" economies. The only way these companies can continue posting increasing profits, is through further malicious oppression, repression, and brutal interventions to terraform the nations of the Earth into entire continents of slaves for the rich white owneshareholder and their petit bourgeois minions that help them count the money in circulation and non-productive activities.
Socialist Revolution: Arises in a society when profits have fallen, and capital is trapped within its own borders. At this point, we find that in formerly colonized and non-"white" countries that do not have liberal democratic regimes, this can result in a successful socialist revolution. However, we also find that in liberal democracies established by Western Europe and the US, the conditions for socialist revolution instead portend fascism. Why? The workers in the US -- fat, bloated parasites that they are -- have only been able to survive in their increasingly exorbitantly expensive societies through the cheap consumer goods they've been bribed with by the capitalists exploiting the backbreaking labor of the Global South and East. The more those countries break free from Western/US imperialism and close off their markets, the more precarious and tenuous the livelihoods of First World workers become -- this has been the underlying class interests driving global white supremacist racism and capitalist-imperialism.
In fact, the arrival of fascism should be met with joy by Communists, not because of the fascism itself, which threatens the annihilation of mankind and must be defeated by any means necessary, but because it means the material conditions for socialist revolution are present (profits have fallen low enough; enough capital mobility has been denied or limited to force them to seek profits by crushing their own workforce/populations). If the society goes fascist, it will be because of the underlying class interests behind racism, which is the ruling rationale for colonialism and imperialism, even when carried out by nonwhite clients of Western imperialist powers or wannabe Western imperialist powers like Japan or Germany post-WW1.
Trump: Shows fascism is here, which means socialism is also here. If you are not agitating, educating, or mobilizing troops, then you are simply meme'ing your way to certain doom in the next 10 years (probably less). The US is racist and the military-industrial complex (Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, etc.) are the ones spreading atrocity propaganda about other countries (they started running the bot farms regarding Chinese "organ harvesting" today after being sanctioned). Half the US is fully on-board with Nazism, which means the international capital segment dominated by immigrant whites (like Google's founders) and American Jews (Wall Street, corporate media), suddenly find themselves on the dinner menu of the racist nationalists they've been in bed with this whole time. Of course, being capitalists themselves, many will collaborate, others will try to call in international "favors" and spark toothless color revolutions against Trump like the Women's March (while forgetting that the most crucial element of successful color revolutions abroad, is the clandestine violence that accompanies them), but they will soon realize they cannot stop the fascist movement. Of course, being capitalists, they will seek to preserve their own dominion and profits over all else, and if the racist nationalists come for them, as they are currently doing, then Civil War is the only outcome as profits continue to fall and other countries continue denying the US access to their markets and their labor. There is no alternative, other than a doomed mission to go to war with Russia and China, nuclear powers, in order to destroy and rebuild industries like the US did with Europe post-WW2, saving it from the Great Depression.

Horrors of Capitalism

The below 2 links on child Labor show the issues with racism and exploitation endemic to capitalism, especially with first world western nations (classist and racist) exploiting developing nations.

2020.10.24 16:19 Cheez30 Friend called me white.. What do I do in this situation

Back before quarantine in high school my friend called me the whitest black person. I'm black btw. I didnt know what this meant so I took it as a joke but he kept saying it as time went on and I started to realize its not a joke. The nail in the coffin was when he asked to say the nword to another guy (Yea i know.. this is a regular joke in our school and generation. At this point I can't do nothing about that) but then someone pointed to me and said why not ask him (me) since i was black. Then this happened. He dead ass stared at me with a fake smile saying "No sorry. I just.. don't really see you as a black person.. you know what mean?" And I just sat there feeling dead inside.
Btw some backround information: I had this thing where I was scared of speaking so I would stay mute and not say anything unless forced to by teachers. Had this since I had a coma for like 1 or 3 months when I was a baby but it only really affected my school life instead of family or outside. Sometimes I broke out of it when u was young but i would move to a different school and it would come back to the point of no return until i finally built up the courage in high school (yes very stupid of me but im different now) So in high school I just started speaking to people and getting out my comfortzone. This was my first time dealing with something like this so I don't know what to do.
Since quarantine happened I just ghosted him and im pretty sure he doesn't know the reason why because he kept telling me he felt like i was avoiding him at school and asking me whats up. He one of my first and only few friends. I want to talk to him like we used to do but another part of me doesn't want to because of what he said. Just why would he say that though. Is it because I'm not ghetto? I don't fit the ghetto stereotype that every white person thinks a black person should act? Is it because i don't "sound black" since I was raised well. I mean I most surround myself around black culture like I watch mostly black celebrities or influencers and I listen to rap mostly like others. I just dont get whats makes me "white" is it because I'm soft i guess. I'll admit I'm kinda soft because I think its unnecessary to be rude and shit and actually respect people including teachers. Either way I dont get how you could act a color. Its like they are saying that ONLY white people can act that way and black people are just thugs and ghettos that are violent. Its like in their eyes you can only be black when you have an accent or act ghetto.. 🤦🏿‍♂️
Now that i think about it there are some people that thought the same thing too and called me names like "oreo" and boujee black. And surprisingly a black dude that I didn't know called me white 🤷🏿‍♂️. So what do you do after that then. Just surrender and be "white"? I asked one of my other friends that thought the same thing and asked why he thought that. He said my music taste is black but then said that i have very little black in my voice because i don't speak ebonics and that the memes that I like or my humor is white... and also told me to take it as a compliment... so humor can be white now?? And I understand what he means by that like im not dumb but come on humor??? And he said to take it like a compliment like he didnt like black people who "acted black"
At that moment I realize how big of an issue racism is today and they dont even realize what they are doing. So now our race gets hated on for our color and stereotype but now we are not supposed to act any other way besides that? These white people don't even realize they are the reason that the black stereotype exist 🤦🏿‍♂️. And the worst part is that some black people encourage this. My guess is that they've also been through this too and were glad they arent in that position anymore and just wanted to join the crowd. Every black person has had to deal with this. Typing this down ive realize how stupid I am for wanting to talk to that friend again but part of me I miss how things were. I just wish race didn't get in the way of bonds and life in general. So its been months later and I feel way different now. I've been primarily watching black creators only and getting into black communities online and having extra love for my race.
School is online now so sometimes my friend tries to text me like every thing is fine but I mostly take a long time to respond and it would be small words and barely conversations. So yea we barely talk now and i mostly ghost him but a part of me misses those old times and wishes things weren't this way.. what should I do? Should I just completely stop talking to him or am i just over reacting and give it another try? I feel like if I talk to him that in a way I'm betraying my race because ill be letting him control me and he could just call me white again and I wouldn't do anything about it. I dont even want tell him what he said is bothering me because it shows a sign of weakness and he'll just use it against me all the time and I don't want to deal with that conflict. Just knowing how he is things wouldn't be the same way if I told him. Either things arent the same way right now. I just wish things weren't this way.

2020.10.23 19:18 JasontheHappyHusky What Is Manifesting And Does It Work?

When the Australian television producer Rhonda Byrne published The Secret in 2006, book critics responded, for the most part, by laughing at it. This wasn’t necessarily unwarranted; Byrne’s assertion that positive things will happen to you if only you think enough positive thoughts is crammed with unscientific New Ageisms that feel like truth no matter how untrue they actually are.
Her central ideas fall apart with the tiniest prodding: People don’t die of cancer because they fail to manifest enough positive thoughts to ward off the disease, for instance. Besides, it was Byrne who had the last laugh: The Secret has sold 30 million copies since then, and is among the most successful self-help books of all time.
It doesn’t take much critical thought to understand why The Secret and books like it — The Power of Positive Thinking, The Science of Getting Rich, Think and Grow Rich — are so popular: They offer a portrait of the world that is extraordinarily alluring, one where the only obstacle to achieving every dream we might have is to focus very hard on it, as though pretending like we’re already gorgeous, successful, deliriously happy human beings will make it real.
Which is why, more than a decade after The Secret, a new generation is discovering its central thesis, except this time on social media. On TikTok, teenagers share stories about how “scripting,” or repeatedly writing down a wish, caused a crush to finally text them back. On YouTube, vloggers lead tutorials on how to properly manifest your dream future. On Instagram, someone will write that $20,000 will soon land in your hands, and all you have to do is comment “YES.” On Twitter, stans will, ironically or not, attempt to manifest the release of a new Lorde album.

2020.10.22 13:17 Neuro_Skeptic I Found A Secret App That Predicts the Future

Blog Title: Jeremy’s London Life
Tuesday 14th October 2019: I first heard about “Oracle” a few months ago. A rumour went around online about an app that could predict your future, make you rich, maybe even let you cheat death.
At the time, I was spending a lot of time reading about the occult and paranormal, so I followed the “Oracle” story, but I didn’t really believe in it. There were a lot of crazy claims flying around. Some said that once you installed it, you couldn’t get rid of it. Some said it used ancient Chinese divination, others that it was based on astrology.
No one seemed to agree on what the app was really called, but most referred to it as “the Oracle”. This wasn’t an app you could just download from the store, that much was clear. People said you got it from some secret source, but I never saw anyone link to a download for it. Within a few weeks, the story was dead.
Then today, while bored at work (if you think accounting is boring, try QA testing accountancy software), I found myself thinking about the “Oracle” again. I did some searches to see if anything new had happened in recent months, and this is when I found a strange thing.
My searches turned up nothing. None of the posts that I remembered reading months ago showed up, no matter what terms I tried. All mention of the app seemed to have been wiped. Now, in my experience the people who post about supernatural topics do tend towards the paranoid, and it’s not uncommon that one of them will decide to erase their own posting history, but it was odd that everything had gone.
I had an idea. I turned to my phone, and found – as I’d hoped - that I still had some of the old URLs in my browser history. I tried them, but the addresses were all 404.
All except one. One of the links still worked – it was a post on an obscure forum, dated five months ago, but it had been edited just a few days ago. I think the post used to be a kind of summary of what was known about the “Oracle” at that time, but now, all the old information was removed and a single link was there in its place.
The link worked. It pointed to an Android app, which I installed. The app’s name was blank, so I’m just going to keep calling it “Oracle”.
I ran the app. I don’t know what I was expecting, but whatever I’d hoped for, it was a disappointment. A plain white screen appeared with black text in the middle, default font, simply saying “CLICK TO START”. When I clicked the text, the app immediately quit. Just like some kid’s first “Hello World” app.
This can’t be the real Oracle app that everyone was so excited about months ago – if the original ever existed at all. This app is a prank that probably took someone 5 minutes to put together.
Nothing else interesting happened today. Now I’m at home writing this, then I’m going to eat pizza, shower, watch Game of Thrones, and go to bed. With a life this exciting, is it any wonder I’m searching the internet for magic?
Wednesday 15th October 2019: When I checked my phone this morning, I found a new notification with a white square for an icon, and a blank app name. Looks like the Oracle was still running and it had a message for me. When I tapped on it, it read:
AVOID RICHMOND AVENUE
I’ll admit that I was quite unsettled when I read that. Richmond Avenue is a road near my flat. It’s part of my daily cycling route to work. The Oracle seemed to know me.
The message was still at the back of my mind half an hour later as I unlocked my bike, put my headphones in and headed off for the 10-minute journey to work.
I knew it was crazy, but the app’s message kept bothering me. When it came to it, I didn’t take the corner to Richmond Avenue. I went straight past the turning and took a slightly longer alternative route.
By the time I got to work, I was pissed at myself for being afraid of a text message from a joke app, but this morning was a busy one and I quickly forgot about the bike ride, as I got to work finishing a presentation for a meeting that was due that afternoon.
All day long I was checking my phone (even more often than usual), but nothing happened – no more notifications from the beyond!
At some point in the afternoon I worked out how the app did it: it must have accessed my GPS data. It could have picked the name of a place near my location, and used that to generate a seemingly personalized warning. It’s a more sophisticated prank than I’d first thought.
Thursday 16th October 2019: I’m pretty freaked out, I must admit. I’m starting to think that this app is more than just a meme.
There was no new message notification this morning, but after lunch, I was browsing the news, when I saw the headline in the “Local News” sidebar:
“Bus Crashes on Richmond Avenue”
According to the story, yesterday morning a number 57 London bus came off the road and plowed through a storefront. The driver was in hospital in critical condition – he’d had a heart attack and that’s what caused the crash. The shop had been empty and no one else was hurt in the accident.
I know the bus route and I know that shop. I’ve shopped there and I cycle past it every day. If I’d taken the turn onto Richmond Avenue yesterday morning, would I have been in the bus’s path?
Logically, I know that even if I had been on that road, the chances that I’d been in the exact path of that bus are tiny. Still, I can’t get the image of myself going under that bus out of my head.
Friday 20th October 2019: I didn’t sleep well last night, and this morning I woke up before my alarm rang, which isn’t usual for me. I lay there for a long time before I reached for my phone. Again, there was nothing there from the Oracle. I was a little relieved and a little disappointed at the same time.
Saturday 21st October 2019: This morning I got a new message.
AVOID BARNARD PARK
AVOID LUNCH
Barnard Park is a green space very near my flat, and I was due to have lunch with my sister today.
I lay staring at the screen for a while. The park was nearby and could be another random location, but how could the app possibly know about my lunch appointment? Then I checked my calendar. I had set myself a reminder “Emma lunch”. It could have picked up on that.
I debated with myself whether to cancel lunch or not. The Oracle had been right about Richmond Avenue, or so it seemed, but what were the chances that two fatal freak accidents awaited me today, just after I’d escaped the first one?
I told myself this, and other reassuring things, but my mind kept coming back to the scene of me crushed by a bus. Eventually, with two hours to go until lunch, I called Emma.
“Hey, listen, I’m really, really sorry, but I’m not going to be able to make it. I’m feeling pretty rough.” I lied.
“Oh… shit. Are you OK?”
“I’m OK, I think I’ve got flu, someone at work had it and… I’m sorry to do this.”
I didn’t like lying to her, but I didn’t feel like admitting that I’d cancelled on the advice of my digital fortune-teller.
I stayed home all day today and searched again for information on the Oracle. I was looking for someone out there who knew about this and could help me, or at least relate to what I was going through. But like last time, there was nothing online about it. Even the link I’d used to download it was now broken.
Sunday 22nd October 2019: No message today.
This afternoon, I checked the news to see if the app had helped me avoid any deadly situations yesterday. Had there been a fire at the restaurant where Emma and I were supposed to eat? Had an oak tree fallen in Barnard Park perhaps? Not according to the news. Nothing unusual had happened.
Monday 23rd October 2019: Nothing from the app today either. I’m starting to feel more realistic about this whole thing. It has to be a prank. The Richmond Avenue bus crash was a lucky fluke. It’s all a matter of statistics. How many people downloaded that app? Hundreds? Thousands? If it’s making random warnings for that many people, a few of them are bound to come true just by luck. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, like they say.
Tuesday 24th October 2019: Screw this.
AVOID WATER
That’s what I just woke up to, and I just uninstalled the app. Despite all the rumours about how you can’t just delete it, it didn’t mysteriously refuse to uninstall, or make my phone explode, or do any other creepy stuff. It’s gone, like any normal app. As soon as I got rid of it, I felt a great sense of relief, and yes, embarrassment. I can’t believe I fell for this obvious practical joke.
Now I’m going to have a shower.

2020.10.21 22:50 GlaciatedNorth Bottom Text

About Bottom Text is a phrase commonly used as the default filler text for blank templates on image macro generator websites. Due to its frequent and unintended use in low-quality instances of Advice Animal memes, the phrase itself has become a staple of ironic memes.
Origin The origin of the placeholder text can be traced back to as early as 2009 when the image captioning website MemeGenerator[1] was created. In the caption-editing mode, the site would automatically populate each blank image template with phrases "Top Text" and "Bottom Text," which could then be customized by the user to one's liking.
Spread As the popularity of Advice Animal memes continued to grow into the early 2010s, along with the adoption of the identical filler text by other image macro generators, such as Quickmeme[2], Cheezburger[3] and Imgur[4] (shown below), so did the volume of incomplete or low-quality image macros in which the "bottom text" would remain unchanged. However, the intentional usage of the phrase in original image macros didn't take off until mid-to-late 2015, around when the concepts of ironic memes and shitposting became recognized as staples of the Internet meme culture, which soon prompted a noticeable influx of ironic image macros featuring the caption "bottom text" as satirical commentaries on the oversaturation of Advice Animal memes and the mainstreaminization of the internet meme culture at large. In 2016, the "bottom text" meme continued to gain traction through ironic meme communities on major social media platforms, such as Tumblr,[5] Reddit[6] and Weird Facebook.

2020.10.21 12:26 GlassPod Some things that helped me

Around 5 years ago my anxiety was at its peak. I'd wake up every morning with my stomach churning and anxious thoughts that would keep me in bed for hours overthinking (I worked from home at the time). I became a shell of who I was. I dealt with depression and overwhelming guilt. I lost a lot of friends (I wasn't thinking rationally and cut them off) and I started to fear going out incase I bumped into people I didn't want to see. I was prescribed beta blockers for my palpitations but didn't take them because I was afraid of starting meds.
Recovering and building my confidence took some time. I'd say for the last 2 years I've more or less been okay. I have some anxious moments if something major happens or if I have conflict with my SO or a family member but I try and do some of the below to stop myself slipping back down to where I was.
Here are some things that I think helped me (sorry it all looks like a wall of text. I'm not sure how to get the formatting right so there's a space between the bullet points):
This post ended up being far longer than I intended, and I'm sorry if you've seen it all before. Thanks for reading my essay if you got this far lol. :)

2020.10.21 07:51 yisarer What Are Memes?

Reading the title, you must be thinking what really memes are. Of course, we are talking about internet memes which are really "IN" these days. Memes are actually concepts in a form of links, images, phrase, fashion, sites or videos which is spread through the internet. It is anything that is shared online. Commonly, it is quickly spread via blogs and social networking sites.
The most obvious example for a meme to spread quickly includes posting some photos to someone's Facebook wall or sending via emails. One of the most popular memes today is the comic-like images which are mostly funny. These kinds of memes are easily spread because it is easily understood. What's more, both the picture and the text are funny. While I am telling you this, I know you already have memes in mind especially the ones that are really popular.
Internet marketers have used memes for viral marketing and still using it today through social media marketing. Memes are easily digested than writing a long article. Memes are brief and get people's attention quite easily.
There are millions and millions of memes in people's mind. On the other hand, only the best memes are remembered and are spread quickly. Most of these popular memes are even left on other people's minds and shared again and again. And memes that are not good enough easily fade away. We cannot actually imagine the number of memes that were not recognized.
I could actually compare memes to chain letters since it goes from one to person to another and in just a few minutes you don't know how many have shared them online. It is true that memes are a form Art. It is used to promote stuff, to market things or only to be funny. Memes are evolving and we do not know if they are here to stay.
How Did Memes Come About?
Just like all the other things, we all have stories about where we come from. Meme, as a word, was said to be originated from Richard Dawkin's book to describe a piece of culture that replicates.. He talked about the significance in explaining the human behavior as well as the cultural evolution. From that time on, memes have evolved naturally and many have said the evolution of memes is really a phenomenon.
Memes have now become popular and people of the new generation use these many times. Many mispronounce meme as "me-me". However, it is actually pronounced as "meem". Funny texts, videos and images are now virally spreading through the internet and it is still growing. As social media sites become better and better and as the number of users are increasing, memes are also spread even faster.
Do you have a Facebook account or Twitter account? If yes, look at the news feed, it is full of every sorts of memes that you could imagine. Try to look at your Facebook wall and you will see some images or phrases with most likes. That only means that those statuses with more like and shares are the most intriguing or interesting. Same thing with twitter, a tweet is retweeted many times and sometimes other users even mark your tweets as favorite.
With regards to Internet memes, it is unclear to where it really came from or what was the first internet meme that came out? However, we must all have seen a Baby Dancing which really became viral. Was it the first meme that came out? For me, Internet memes are just like the memes which Dawkins have talked about. The only thing, I think is different is that internet memes are the evolved version. Until now, there are still people out there discussing the history of memes and some are still even asking "what are memes?".

2020.10.19 17:10 AutoModerator Weekly /r/neojazz Discussion - What have you been listening to?

Please use this thread to discuss whatever music you've been listening to lately (old or new, any genre). As usual, try not to just list the names of games as your entire post, please make sure to elaborate with your opinions and takeaways. Writing the names of the songs/albums in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. You may also be interested in using a service like last.fm (all platforms), Explr.fm (last.fm add-on), Skiley (Spotify), StatsForSpotify (Spotify), or Apple Music's Replay feature to visually depict what albums/songs/artists/genres you've been listening to. This site can be used to generate last.fm collages.
Some other things you can do:
Happy talking!

2020.10.17 16:08 brwalkernc Reminder on Rules and Existing Daily/Weekly Threads

With our surge of incoming users with all the Covid-19 self-isolation/self-quarantine/gym closures. I wanted to repost a reminder about rules and also have it visible for new visitors to the community.
Also, as a note, the mod team understands that it isvery difficult to get a doctor’s visit for anything non-emergency right now. That doesn’t mean this is the place to find those answers instead. People on the internet cannot diagnose or offer treatments. If you have a question about pain/injury that is sharp, persistent, and/or unknown, that post will be removed.
Additionally, here's the link for usual Cold WeatheWinter megathread or if you are in the southern hemisphere, the Heat, Humidity, Summer running thread.

For you new runners, please check out the info that is in the Wiki.

Here's the section in the Wiki for beginners (which can also apply to returning runners). This also has some good tips.
This resource is linked in the sidebatop menu and may have some info you can use as you get started (or back into) running.
Take some time to the search the sub and browse the daily Official Q&A thread and you will find plenty of tips for getting started/back.

Using running

The mods do their best to actively moderate this community. When posting, we expect users to make an effort to familiarize themselves with our rules and practices before submitting posts or comments. We suggest taking note of Rule 2 and Rule 7, since these are the most commonly broken which will result in a thread being removed.
The mod team has tried to lay out the rules with some expected guidelines of what is or is not allowed, but there is always some gray area and posts are up to interpretation by the mod team. We do our best to be consistent, but that isn’t always the case with multiple mods or even the same mod between similar posts. The mod team wants to make /running a resource for new and experienced runners and to build a community between all types of runners.*
Regardless of that fact, Moderators have the final say. We are open to hearing differing opinions, but the mod team will make the final decision. Visitors and posters in /running are expected to understand that the mod team are people too and doing the best they can to manage a very large sub with frequent posts every day. If you do not agree with how this sub is moderated, we expect you to do so in a civil manner….and also know when it is time to drop it.*

Rules

(1) - Follow proper Reddiquette [Keep it civil!] and the subreddit's Posting Procedures [post flair, using Daily/Weekly Threads]. The moderation team reserves the right to remove content or restrict user posting privileges as necessary.
We are all here to learn and discuss running. And with the wide variety of run types, training plans, methods, etc., there will be varying opinions. There is plenty of room here for disagreement and discussion. There is no room for doing that in an uncivil manner. Posters are expected to behave in a considerate manner knowing that they are interacting with people they do not know. Remember the human. With the anonymity of the internet, it is easy to say things you would never say to someone in person. In addition, this medium does not allow tone to come through. Please keep both of those facts in mind.
Behaviors that will not be tolerated:
  • Threats
  • Excessive foul language
  • Harassment
  • Trolling
  • Personal attacks
  • Excessive aggression
  • Use of any kind of slur
  • Inappropriate/sexual comments
  • Excessive back-and-forth arguing not related to the initial thread/comment
That being said, not every abrasive/abrupt comment is a personal or targeted attack. In most cases, posters will be warned, and the offending comment/post removed. Repeated violations will result in a ban.
(2) - Posts need to generate discussion and/or useful information that other searchers can then benefit from. Low-quality posts, recent reposts, chronically repetitive posts, posts not directly related to running, and questions that are easily answered by FAQ, searching running, or Google are subject to removal at the moderation team's discretion.
This sub attracts a lot of beginners as well as “drive-by” posting. A major goal of the sub is to promote quality discussion and develop a community where information and experiences can be shared. Many of the common questions have been answered, either in previous threads/FAQ, or could easily be answered in the daily Q&A thread. Yes, circumstances can vary person to person, but it is expected that posters make an attempt to find these answers for themselves before making a stand-alone post. Visitors should put forth some effort in finding the answer themselves and not expect the Runnit community to do all the work for them. If the post/question is very specific to your situation (such that other general user won't get much benefit from the information), then it belongs in the daily Q&A thread.
If you do make a stand-alone post, please include info relevant for the community to help. It is nearly impossible to offer any advice without sufficient background information. Items that could be relevant:
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Current MPW + pace
  • Previous peak MPW
  • Workouts you traditionally or recently have completed
  • Goals (including specific races)
  • Previous PRs
  • Other things you think might be helpful to include
Below are some of the reason a post would be considered low-quality, thus being removed and directed to the Daily Q&A thread:
  • If your post is just a question in the title.
  • If your post is a question in the title plus “See title” or “Title says it all” in the body.
  • If your question can be asked in one sentence.
  • If your question is very specific to you or your situation.
  • If your question can be answered either with a yes/no.
  • In general, it I helpful to include something that shows you made an effort to find an answer within the community and thus separate it from the numerous low-effort posts that are submitted every day.
  • Additionally, as rule 5 states, make your title descriptive. If it is not clear what the post is about or asking, then it will not be useful in later searches.
Finally, while mutual encouragement and sharing of information is a very high priority of running, numerous motivational-type and PSA posts are not necessary. A larger goal of the sub is to provide information to runners, beginners and experienced, which can get drowned out by these types of posts.
(3) - No self-promotion (including links to personal blogs, social media, Youtube channel, etc.), advertising, spam, or surveys. This includes giveaways, charity events, and promotional discounts.
Self-promotion/advertising on /running is not allowed. This sub is not the place to drive traffic to your blog, Youtube channel, social media, business, whatever. You can buy an ad from Reddit for this. Posts and comments such as these will be removed. Repeated offenses will result in a ban. If your username is the name of your product/business/service, you will automatically be banned. Check out reddit's self-promotion guidelines for more info.
In addition, surveys of any sort are not allowed. Runnit is not a free sample population to be used.
(4) - Please do not post elite race results in the title of posts. This includes the announcing of world records in titles.
(5) - Please make your title descriptive. This means letting readers know roughly what your post will be about before they click. “Question” is not a good title for a post. Neither is “Help needed”. Do not use excessive emoji characters in the titles of posts.
(6) - Displaying detailed personal information of anyone other than yourself is prohibited. Submission of content focused on ousting cheaters will be removed at the moderation team's discretion.
(7) - Do not solicit medical advice. This includes 'Has anyone else experienced this injury?' type posts.
While there is some leeway on advice for rehabbing some common running injuries, this sub is not the place for a diagnosis, and especially not for advice on major injuries. If you are hurt or injured, find a medical professional with the proper credentials to help you. Not the internet.
There is a big difference between "Hey, my IT band is tight. Got any good stretches for it?" and "My shins hurt every time I run. If I run through the pain, will it turn into a stress fracture?" If your question involves sharp pains, unknown/vague pains, or injuries/problems that have stretched on for long periods of time, then it is a question for medical professional.
Also, your doctor not being familiar with running injuries is no excuse. Find a Sports Medicine doctor, Physical Therapist, or find another doctor.
(8) - Submissions must be running-related. Do not submit photos, videos, or memes that add nothing to the discussion.
Running related pictures and videos are allowed, but cannot be self-promotion [Rule 3] and must have some type of intro in the text body or comments as to why Runnit should click the link [Rule 10].
(9) - The 'TMI Rule' - Individual posts highlighting bodily functions such as bowel movements will be removed at the discretion of the moderation team.
We don't need to hear about you crapping yourself or coming home with one sock. No, it doesn't make you a "real" runner.
(10) - When posting articles, please include some text to start a discussion about the article.
/running does not allow threads that are solely sharing a link without any engagement. If you are going to share something, at least provide a conversation starter. Reposts of the same news topic, even from a different source, will most likely be removed unless it offers different details.
Example of a good lead in statement for an article thread.

Daily and Weekly Threads

In order to reduce clutter and nudge you lurkers into posting, we have created a number of daily and weekly threads for you to read, make a comment, or ask a question. Unless you truly believe your new thread will make a new and interesting contribution to Runnit, please wait until the related weekly thread rolls around and post in there instead. Here are the current daily and weekly threads:
  • Daily Achievement Thread (Posted daily): Any and all accomplishment posts should be posted here. Anything from new PRs, to longest weekly mileage, to running your first ultra – literally any accomplishments you experienced recently!
  • General Q&A Thread (Posted daily): With over 500,000 users, there are a lot of running-related questions that come in every day. In an effort to keep the front page of the sub uncluttered and fresh, we ask you post your questions, particularly those one-off questions that are potentially short and don't necessarily provoke useful discussion, in the daily General Q&A thread.
  • Weekly Training Thread (Sundays): This is where you will find posts on the training of your fellow runnitors for the week. Take a look at the various formats that are posted and feel free to post your own. It is also a great place to see what kind of training some of the more experienced runnitors are doing (though as mentioned, all are welcome to post). Please note that this is not an accomplishment thread.
  • Miscellaneous Monday General Chit-Chat (Mondays): A general discussion and chat not necessarily restricted to running topics, though running discussion is also welcome, including what you've read/watched/played/done over the weekend, where you ran, short race reports not worth full posts, and more.
  • Li'l Race Reports Thread (Mondays): This is a more recent addition to our recurring threads. It's for anyone and everyone to use who'd like to write up a short summary about a race or recent run they did. If you feel your report doesn't need a whole new post, then add it to the collection in the Li'l Race Reports Thread!
  • Super Moronic Monday (Tuesdays): Here is the topic most new runners should look out for. Any and all questions are welcome here with no judgment. Take the time now to browse some of the older topics, and you might find an answer to a question you didn’t even know you had!
  • Run Nutrition Tuesday (Tuesdays): Have a question about nutrition and how it affects running? Curious about miracle substances like caffeine or beet juice?! Ask about it here.
  • Lurker's Wednesday (Wednesday): Would you rather not be a lurker? New to the community? Then introduce yourself in this thread! The LW thread is an invitation to get more involved with the /running community.
  • What Are You Wearing Wednesday Weekly Gear Thread (Wednesdays) What gear have you picked up lately? What are you wearing or using that's helped your running? Discuss it in this thread!
  • Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread (Thursdays): Have a running-related complaint or confession? Get it off your chest here.
  • Race Roll Call (Thursdays): Racing in the next week? Call out your race in a top level comment and find other Runnitors who will be there.
  • Run My City (Fridays): If you are traveling and would like to keep up with your training, here are some guides to provide recommendations on how and where to safely run in their city as well as weekly crowd-sourced threads.
  • Friday Spotlight (Fridays): Learn more about your fellow runners in this popular weekly spotlight interview. Link to previous Spotlights.
  • Photo Friday (Fridays): This thread is for any of your running photos. It is a great to see all the different terrains people run in, as well as all those inspiring and hilarious race photos. Each week, the top three photos as upvoted by runnitors will be featured in the main post.
  • The Weekend Thread (Fridays): Come share what exciting things you have planned for the weekend, running-related or not.
  • Social Saturday (Saturdays): Got a project you've been working on (video, programming, etc.), share it here! Want to promote a business or service, share it here! Trying to get more Instagram followers, share it here! Found any great running content online, share it here!
  • Monthly Updates & Check In Thread (Last Day of the Month): Let everyone know how your month turned out! Feel free to discuss your racing, training, and any other stats that you may or may not be pleased with, as well as any goals you have planned for the next months.
Finally, there is a lot of info in the Wiki. Yes, some of it is from old posts. Yes, the layout is not the greatest. It is always a work in progress.
If you come across info that needs to be updated (or broken links), let us know. If you see a post that should be in there, let us know. If you see a lack of a helpful topic, let us know.

Thank you all for being a part of this community!

2020.10.17 01:17 feather-64 feather64 [smp] {no claims}{no protection}{raid}{1.16}

About feather64
feather64 has been operating since 2012.
Our current map was started August 7th 2020 (Season 11) and will remain for at least 1 year.
We created the server after some of our favorite servers closed and we were unable to find the same game style. We are a Raiding-Survival server with very little moderation. We allow raids, PVP, and griefing. On feather64 you cannot protect/claim land. We have a clans system, an economy system which uses Lapis Lazuli, and basic commands like sethome and tpa. Play your way on feather64. Grief and raid, hide and collect, design and construct, enchant and pvp, it's up to you.
Rules
  1. Do not modify gameplay.
Exceptions include reasonable graphical modification (shader-packs, resource-packs, etc) and performance modification (Optifine, sodium, etc)
  2. Do not use any-item duplication glitches
Any-item duplication glitches are dupes that work on any item. (duping item entities, duping content of containers, etc)
  3. Do not evade a ban.

2020.10.16 19:20 flacciduck Ultimate glossary of crypto currency terms, acronyms and abbreviations

I thought it would be really cool to have an ultimate guide for those new to crypto currencies and the terms used. I made this mostly for beginner’s and veterans alike. I’m not sure how much use you will get out of this. Stuff gets lost on Reddit quite easily so I hope this finds its way to you. Included in this list, I have included most of the terms used in crypto-communities. I have compiled this list from a multitude of sources. The list is in alphabetical order and may include some words/terms not exclusive to the crypto world but may be helpful regardless.
2FA
Two factor authentication. I highly advise that you use it.
51% Attack:
A situation where a single malicious individual or group gains control of more than half of a cryptocurrency network’s computing power. Theoretically, it could allow perpetrators to manipulate the system and spend the same coin multiple times, stop other users from completing blocks and make conflicting transactions to a chain that could harm the network.
Address (or Addy):
A unique string of numbers and letters (both upper and lower case) used to send, receive or store cryptocurrency on the network. It is also the public key in a pair of keys needed to sign a digital transaction. Addresses can be shared publicly as a text or in the form of a scannable QR code. They differ between cryptocurrencies. You can’t send Bitcoin to an Ethereum address, for example.
Altcoin (alternative coin): Any digital currency other than Bitcoin. These other currencies are alternatives to Bitcoin regarding features and functionalities (e.g. faster confirmation time, lower price, improved mining algorithm, higher total coin supply). There are hundreds of altcoins, including Ether, Ripple, Litecoin and many many others.
AIRDROP:
An event where the investors/participants are able to receive free tokens or coins into their digital wallet.
AML: Defines Anti-Money Laundering laws**.**
ARBITRAGE:
Getting risk-free profits by trading (simultaneous buying and selling of the cryptocurrency) on two different exchanges which have different prices for the same asset.
Ashdraked:
Being Ashdraked is essentially a more detailed version of being Zhoutonged. It is when you lose all of your invested capital, but you do so specifically by shorting Bitcoin. The expression “Ashdraked” comes from a story of a Romanian cryptocurrency investor who insisted upon shorting BTC, as he had done so successfully in the past. When the price of BTC rose from USD 300 to USD 500, the Romanian investor lost all of his money.
ATH (All Time High):
The highest price ever achieved by a cryptocurrency in its entire history. Alternatively, ATL is all time low
Bearish:
A tendency of prices to fall; a pessimistic expectation that the value of a coin is going to drop.

A manipulation of a stock or commodity by investors.
Bitcoin:
The very first, and the highest ever valued, mass-market open source and decentralized cryptocurrency and digital payment system that runs on a worldwide peer to peer network. It operates independently of any centralized authorities
Bitconnect:
One of the biggest scams in the crypto world. it was made popular in the meme world by screaming idiot Carlos Matos, who infamously proclaimed," hey hey heeeey” and “what's a what's a what's up wasssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuuup, BitConneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeect!”. He is now in the mentally ill meme hall of fame.
Block:
A package of permanently recorded data about transactions occurring every time period (typically about 10 minutes) on the blockchain network. Once a record has been completed and verified, it goes into a blockchain and gives way to the next block. Each block also contains a complex mathematical puzzle with a unique answer, without which new blocks can’t be added to the chain.
Blockchain:
An unchangeable digital record of all transactions ever made in a particular cryptocurrency and shared across thousands of computers worldwide. It has no central authority governing it. Records, or blocks, are chained to each other using a cryptographic signature. They are stored publicly and chronologically, from the genesis block to the latest block, hence the term blockchain. Anyone can have access to the database and yet it remains incredibly difficult to hack.
Bullish:
A tendency of prices to rise; an optimistic expectation that a specific cryptocurrency will do well and its value is going to increase.
